Episode 113 ~ Smack in the Face

Their cab pulled up in front of the building on 5th. To Legacy, it seemed to tower with all the promises that the city had made to them when they’d first arrived as kids.

“This is so unfair!” she pouted. Amanda had been such a bitch when they’d been in design school, always gunning for Legacy even back then.

“Okay, get it together.,” Carrie tried to soothe her bestie. “She might not even be there.”

Legacy sighed and Carrie continued. “Have you thought about what you’re going to say?”

“That’s all I’ve thought about since I saw that stupid article. Legacy griped. “Let’s get this over with. How do I look?”

“Eh, nervous… but hot. Let’s go. I got your back.”

Legacy threw her shoulders back and took a long breath. “Alright. I’m ready.”

Amy yawned and stretched. Though she knew better than to say it out loud, the morning had been relatively quiet in trauma. That rarely happened. Daniel had taken a call from his wife and left her apartment while he was still on the phone. They were arguing, some in English and some in…well she wasn’t sure what language but not English. Either way, angry as he was, he had seemed relieved. He’d quietly kissed her forehead and mouthed the word, “sorry” when he’d left. She thought she’d hear from him later that day but he’d never called and she hadn’t seen him that morning either. She caught up to him as he darted into the resident’s lounge.

“Hi,” she said, cautiously.

“Oh, hey!” Daniel replied, startled but he seemed pleased to see her.

“You’re jumpy. Everything…” she looked around as if to make sure no one was listening, ” okay?”

Everything was not okay but the fact that she cared touched him. He reached out a hand to touch her arm when the door flew open.

“Dr. Craythorne?”

Amy jerked away at the sound of Nate’s voice

“Um, yeah…uh, yes, Dr. Dorough?” she stammered. She hated this so much.

Disgusted, Daniel headed to the coffee maker.

“I need to speak with you sometime today,” he was all business but purposely adjusted his tone and finished with, “please.”

“I’m free right now!” she chirped a little too loudly.

Daniel banged a coffee cup on the counter, flung the refrigerator door open with more aggression than necessary only to slam it back shut again.

“I’ve got surgery in 45 minutes,” he shook his head. “I just wanted to make sure I could catch you sometime today. Is that alright?”

He gave nothing away and Amy stood rooted to the floor and said nothing. It was one of those legitimate moments where the time went by only she had no idea how long she’d been standing there with his words looping in her head. Why did Nate suddenly want to talk? She hadn’t done anything, not recently, to piss him off. Nor did he seem particularly mad. Nate wanted to talk. Her heart leaped for a second. Logically, she knew that it didn’t mean anything but he was speaking to her and that was something. She’d forgotten than Daniel was standing there until he purposely pushed through she and Nate on his way out the door.

“I’ll catch up in a minute, Dr. Milton.” she called.

He backed his way out raising his eyebrows knowingly and looking very irritated. “Mm hmm,” was all he said.

“So, I’ll page you in a bit?” Nate asked, his hands stuffed in his pockets. His anger had melted considerably. In fact, after the past few days he’d spent with Carrie, he was pretty well over it all. It was hard to be angry when your life was about as close to perfect as it could get. Still, it was awkward.

“Yes,” she agreed. “Is everything… If this is about the other morning at the diner…” She thought back to how cozy he and Caroline had looked and how deeply it had stung.

“No, it’s not… Fellowship stuff and an opportunity I thought you’d want to know about.”

“Oh,” she’d known that whatever it was would be work related. But he was talking to her and that was a lot. Perhaps she’d be able to apologize, for real this time, for her horrible behavior. “Nate I mean… Dr. Dor…” Her pager went off, interrupting her at the worst time. God, she hated Trauma.

Carrie and Legacy stepped from the elevators and directly into a huge office complex. There were no hallways with private entrances, just a reception desk separating them from the conference rooms and mailboxes behind her.

“Can I help you?” the young woman behind the desk asked, barely looking up.

When Legacy didn’t immediately speak up, Carrie stepped forward and in her most businessy voice said, “Yes, we’re here to see Amanda Van, please.”

“Oh, she’d not here.” the girl replied, sounding bored.

“Ooooh kay…let me try again. Do you know when she’ll be in? It’s important that we see her.”

The girl sighed, “I’ll tell you the same thing I told your friend when he called. She hasn’t been in. When you see her, please ask her to come get her mail. She didn’t leave a forwarding address.”

“Our friend?” Carrie asked.

“Oh,” Legacy nodded, vigorously. “Yes, he’s not a friend. He’s a colleague and as he probably mentioned, it’s really important that we reach her.”

“I’m very sorry,” the girl said, finally looking up. “You’re Caroline Davison?”

“I am, yes!” Carrie remarked, straightening up. Maybe now they’d get somewhere.

“I don’t understand. work for the Halsteads?”

“What? No.” Crap.

“No,” Legacy sighed. “Wait, the Halsteads are looking for her too?”

“Okay, you’re not making sense.”

The girl was confused but they had her attention at the very least.

“Okay, let me back up.,” Carrie sighed. “And, I’m sorry. I didn’t catch your name.” It was a trick she’d learned from David. Address people by their name and you stood a far greater chance of getting what you wanted.

“Shayne, and…”

“Shayne,” Carrie began. “We should have been upfront with you. We’re looking for Ms. Van because she’s taken something from my friend here. We don’t want to cause any trouble but…”

“Here,” Legacy shoved her phone, opened to Carrie’s Instagram, in the girls face. “Look at this?”

“What am I looking… oooh, love that dress. Why are you showing me this?”

“I designed this dress.,” Legacy squawked, pointing her finger at her chest.

Carrie scrambled for her phone and opened the blog post with the Halstead dress. ”

I know it’s the same dress. That red headed bitch…” Legacy was growling causing people grabbing their mail or sitting at a work station to look up.

“She took the design and got paid a hell of a lot for it. Is she here and she’s just hiding?” Legacy demanded. This was not how she’d planned this but then, she hadn’t had much of a plan.

“Look around you?” Shayne glared back. “Where is she going to hide?”

“You mean this is it?” Carrie looked around. “There are no offices, no studios?”

“No. We’ve got shared work spaces and conference rooms but most of our clients just get their mail here.”

“Oh my God,” Legacy whispered, it all sinking in and then to Carrie, “Let’s go.”

They pivoted toward the elevators and Carrie turned back. “Thank you, Shayne. You’ve been most helpful.”

Legacy waited until the elevator doors were closed before letting out a huge, nervous cackle.

“Legacy, it’s not funny. We’re no closer than we were to catching up to her and getting answers.”

“No…”Legacy panted, catching her breath. “It shouldn’t be funny but it is. Or maybe I’ve totally lost it.”

“She’s pretending to be something she’s not,” Carrie offered. “And now the Halsteads are looking for her too. I wonder if we should back off.”

“Why?”

“Because she’s cornered and that could be very dangerous. Plus, this might all unravel without our help.”

“What have we got?” Amy asked, running into the trauma room.

“Unconscious female, approximately 30…”

“Sweet Jesus,” Amy exclaimed. “What happened?”

The woman was beaten so badly, obviously with some kind of a blunt object. A baseball bat maybe. Her cheekbones were clearly fractured and Amy hoped she had some identification. Her shocking red hair would be the only trait her next of kin would recognize.

The police finally were able to bring in her purse, she was identified and her father was called. She coded twice, had some severe internal bleeding, a ruptured spleen, not to mention severe TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). Someone had done this to her in her own home. There was no telling if she’d wake up but she’d have a long road ahead if she did. There were worse things than death. She was dead on her feet by the time she had a free moment and it was only 6:30.

Nate was locking up his office and whispering into the phone when she caught up to him.

“Sounds perfect,” he laughed, softly. “I’m on my way. I love you.” He turned to just as he was hanging up and nearly smacked into Amy.

“You’re leaving?” she asked, surprised. “I thought you wanted to talk.”  He was so different with the ‘I love yous’ and the public affection.  He was relaxed and he was leaving the hospital before the sun set.

“Yeah, I uh… I paged you earlier but you were busy.,” he unlocked his office and held the door open for her. “Let me make a quick call.
